I already belong to the National AAP, why should I become a member of the Kentucky Chapter?
Advocacy
- Increase your knowledge of and participation in legislative and advocacy activities at a local level.
- Increase involvement in the legislative arena to positively influence the quality of pediatric practice and the welfare of children in your state.
- Build coalitions with other organizations working toward improving children’s health and well-being.
- Promote the interests of Kentucky pediatricians in the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Leadership
- Participate in chapter committees in areas of interest.
Networking
- Network with other pediatricians with similar interests.
- Improve chapter membership participation on national AAP affairs.
Education
- Receive chapter newsletter and other informative mailings.
- Attend Continuing Medical Education meetings sponsored by the Chapter.
- Prepare yourself for the future role of the pediatrician in the health care system and for the future management of their practices.
What has your Chapter done lately?
- Employs a full time Executive Director and 4 additional staff members
- Contracted with Amerinet (Nat'l Group Purchasing Organization) to secure savings on vaccines and medical supplies for members
- Worked to secure recent Medicaid reimbursement raises
- Hired a part time Legislative Advisor and developed a Key Contact network program statewide
- Received $95,000 grant for Walking Works-A Path to Fitness program with YMCA partners
- Improved and updated Kentucky Pediatrics Newsletter and Chapter Website
- Created a Kentucky Pediatric Society Foundation, a 501(c)3 designated organization, for the purpose of obtaining grant funds to promote health care for children in Kentucky & hired a part time staffer
- Received $20,000 (renewable for the next 3 yrs.)grant to support Chapter advocacy work such as the Pediatric Advocacy in KY group and participation in the annual Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capital
- Supported Chapter CATCH facilitator’s efforts to increase awareness of program and funding opportunities for pediatricians
- Supported bills in the state House and Senate which have a positive influence on children’s health
- As a partnering organization, received a $900,000 federal grant to provide mental health training workshops to pediatricians and resident
- Conducted Open Forum sessions during UK and UofL pediatric conferences
- Received a $25,000 Healthy People 2010 grant for the statewide Healthy Teeth for Tots Program
- Received a $5,000 quality improvement grant in the areas of asthma and obesity
- Currently piloting a second hand smoke initiative in partnership with the Dept. of Public Health
